Hello, my lovely reader! What's new? Where have I been? Well, it's kind of a funny story. You see, I thought I'd published this post already! As it turned out, it didn't go through. So here I was, wondering why no one had viewed this new post, when lo and behold, that's because it didn't exist. Whoops. Anyway, to make that semi-long story short: I thought it had been two weeks since my last post. It's been six. Eep. My mistake. Sorry! Anyhoo. Today our topic is: BOOKS! (part 1) Now, today I'm going to give ideas for books to give as gifts, both to younger and older kids, or just to check out. We'll start with the younger set and move our way up. The way I'm going to do this is that I will insert the cover, title, and author of a book, along with a teeny-tiny description. Today, we'll just do little kids. Okay? Okay! FOR SMALL CHILDREN: 1. A Bad Case Of Stripes This is a really clever, funny, and sweet book. I vividly remember dressing as this character for Halloween as a small child! 2. A Snowy Surprise This is a really sweet and cute book with a very nice message. 3. The Adventures of Morris the Moose A comical and adorable book, if a bit more intended for slightly older readers; by which I mean, maybe 7-year-olds instead of 5-year-olds. 4. Grandpa's Overalls A really cute and creative story, sure to please all little readers. 5. If I Were Your Mother A touching, heartwarming little story. One of my favorites. 6. Me First An absolutely hilarious story that I still quote to this day....with a message. 7. My Very Own Name A wonderful tale, customized just for your little one! Amazing. 8. Of Thee I Sing A lovely, heartwarming tale by our president, Barack Obama. 9. Sweet Dreams Adorable. I used to read this EVERY NIGHT before bed! 10. The Gift of Nothing Lovely story with #adorbs art! 11. The Kissing Hand Beautiful, sweet story. Awesome! 12. The Snowy Day A very cute tale! 13. The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything Clever, comical, and creative. Perfect for small children or as a nostalgic read for kids and adults! That's all of the ones that sit on my bookshelf at the moment. What? I like them! Great memories :) Alrighty then! Now, we move on to our book review. Today's book is: Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella! This book is AMAZING. It's just incredible! Our narrator is Audrey, a teenager struggling with an anxiety disorder after an incident at her school. We travel with her as she deals with her crazy family, helpful therapist, and an adorable male friend who may become more than that, all the while trying to just "be cured" and "be normal again." Sound kind of depressing? I don't blame you. But the thing is, it's not. At all. Audrey is sweet, loving, clever, and hilarious. Her family is amazing and incredibly funny. They're by no means a perfect family, but they feel real and they are simply wonderful. Audrey's sense of humor is spot-on, and the scenes with her parents and brothers made me crack up. Equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious, Finding Audrey is a brilliant and beautiful novel that I'll reread many, many times. A must-read. Rating: 4.92 stars!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In book news: -Symptoms of Being Human (by Jeff Garvin) came out today! I neeeeeeeeeed it. Pronto. -Looking for a good graphic novel? If you want something serious and well-done, but with a touch of humor, try Persepolis and Persepolis 2 by Marjane Satrapi. -Looking for something similar to The Book Thief (five stars)? Try Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. -I do not recommend: Looking for Alaska by John Green. Sorry, JG...you know I love ya, but not this time. -Help me out and take this survey! Look down... And before we end today's post, I have to include a song. Here it is--Cecilia and the Satellite, performed by The Voice's very own Korin Bukowski! Have a great night, reader! Until next time!
Hey reader! Thanks for coming back-- I know you can't get enough of me, right? *winks* So how are you? Are you excited that it's the holiday season? I know I am! I love this time of year. Of course, that may or may not have a LOT to do with the fact that both Christmas and my birthday are in December.... :) Anyway. Here's our topic for the day-- PIT BULLS! Here we go. So a pit bull is, obviously, a breed of dog. They get a bad reputation from almost everyone! Even in books, you'll very often see (if you're paying attention) similes that reference the ferocity of this kind of dog, like "meaner than a pit bull" or even "uglier than a pit bull" (WHAT?). But the truth is, reader, that a pit bull is actually probably my favorite breed of dog! They are sweet, loving, loyal, and incredibly friendly and kind. In other words, they are the EXACT OPPOSITE of what people think of them! What? You don't believe me?? That's totally okay! I'm here to convince you, right? So that's what I'll do. First of all, if you want some really adorable pit bull puppy pictures, check out this page: http://www.buzzfeed.com/summeranne/the-20-most-adorable-pit-bull-puppy-pictures-ever/ But if you're still not convinced (even if you are, keep following! this is going to be cool), that's fine. Totally fine, actually, because I can definitely convince you! Do you know how I'll do that? Let's see some hands raised! Who knows the answer? Yes! You! In the back! Next to the plant! What do you think? NO, I am NOT going to reenact Monty Python and the Holy Grail. That's completely ridiculous! WHAT?!? Oh, really?!? Why don't YOU go reenact the Martian, hmm?!?!? Tell me about Mars in five years!!! Anyway. Sorry 'bout that. What I'm GOING to do is let my adorable little pit bull--Harvey--profile himself!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi there! I'm Harvey, but you can call me by one of my MANY nicknames...like Harv, Harvard, Harvis, the Little G, Baby G, the Pit Bull, the Piddy, and just the Baby. I love biscuits, dog food, biscuits, pumpkin, biscuits, treats, biscuits, apples, biscuits, and BANANAS!!!!! Yay bananas!!!! (Sorry, had to add that! -Maddie) Ahem! This is MY profile, buster. ANYWAY. My favorite people are my family, like Maddie! They're awesome awesome awesome. Now, I'm sure you want to see what I look like, right? I'm really cute! And sweet! (And a big baby! -Maddie) Really?!? Oy. So I just ran and got you some pictures, see? I'll show you: (Oh, THAT'S what you were doing.... -Maddie) Stop it! Here they are. Also, I really miss my big brother, Sully. So I'll put a few pictures of me and him: Haha, the last one was just for fun. Here are some close-ups of ME: And here are what I would say are the Top 4 best pictures of me: And for your enjoyment, I have one more thing to show you just how cool I am! This: And the last thing before I turn the blog back over to Maddie is, just to show you how loving and sweet I am, I give you this: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey reader, I'm back (Maddie). So that's my little Harv; he's the sweetest little guy in the world. I hope I've enlightened you about pit bulls! And if you liked him, well, if you ask nicely....maybe Harv will come back sometime. Here's our song to end with-- 21 Guns by Green Day! Bye, reader. See you next time!!
Hey there, reader. I know, I know, it's been too long. I've been busy! I'm sorry, though, really. I know that last time I said TBC, but we're going to postpone that until next week. I have something different in mind today. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you, my loyal reader, that my beloved dog Sully passed away last Sunday at the age of fourteen and a half. I would like to dedicate today's post as a memorial for him. Although his name was technically Sullivan, he was known to most as Sully or Sul. His other nicknames included Pearl, Pearlie, Mr. Greencollar, The O.G., Ross Cellino, and James P. Sullivan. He was loved instantly by anyone fortunate enough to meet him, and he had a lovely life. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends, as well as his little brother, Harvey. He died comfortable and surrounded by his closest family. My family adopted him as a tiny, eight-pound puppy in June 2001. Here's his baby self: Then he grew a little older, but he was still just as cute: Sully grew up with me....he was my brother. We all loved him so much and we miss him terribly. Here, I will give you a collection of pictures of him from within the last two years: That's all for today, reader. I'll try to post an entry on Thanksgiving, okay? I'm going to end with a song now. Good night, reader.
Hey there, lovely reader! How are you? I hope you're having a great day. What? Me? My day's going pretty well, thanks for asking. You're sweet. Anyhoodle. Today's topic is: Technology! Yes, I realize that that's a very broad topic. No, I am not going to go over every piece of technology ever invented. Just calm down, okay? Let me explain this a little better. What I'm going to do here is use my opinion--hear that? my OPINION--to write a bit about a few aspects of modern electronics and what they do for (and to) us. So actually, technology isn't the best word....but whatever. So. The first thing I'm going to discuss is websites. Specifically, websites that fall into two categories--games and social media. Games: Yeah, I'm a person that loves to play computer games. I mean, not just computer games--I love the Wii, too, for example--but that's what I'm talking about here, is computer games. There are definitely different types of games for kids/teens: there are games like MovieStarPlanet, Stardoll, and WeeWorld, which focus on fashion and communicating with others; there are games like Animal Jam (love!) that are purely fun "worlds" where users can play games and explore; and there are games like the ones you'll find on sites like coolmath_games.com, that are just simple, fun games. Personally I prefer the "worlds" (find me on Animal Jam), but it's all personal preference. However, the safest do tend to be the coolmath_games.com style--no communication. Speaking of safety: Yeah, these games are fun. But here's a warning you'll hear from most adults, and you're going to hear it from me too--BE CAREFUL. I'm serious, okay? There are....not-nice people out there. Especially on those first types of games. That's the type of danger you always hear about, right? I mean, there are BOOKS about it. Lots of them. Who R U Really? and Want to Go Private? are two examples, but there are many more. However, there's one more thing--a sort of advertising thing. Many sites--Animal Jam, Poptropica, MovieStarPlanet, Stardoll, pretty much every site--has an option to buy a membership or items or SOMETHING. Don't. Seriously. Think about it. Do you really want to waste REAL MONEY so that you can get your pet bumblebee a virtual bed? Honestly? Come on, people. But games aren't all bad. That's not what I'm saying. Keep playing, guys. It's fun! I know! Keep doing it! I'm just saying, be careful. That's all. Now. The next post will be Part 2 of the same topic, okay? Next thing on the agenda now. I'm thinking of adding a new in-every-post feature! I'm writing a story, and I'm thinking of posting a small amount in each post. Should I? One quick announcement: The book Winter comes out tomorrow! It is the conclusion to the epic Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Can you tell??) And now our book review--NEED by Joelle Charbonneau! NEED was....interesting. It was an amazing premise--a social media site that granted your wishes, no matter what the consequences were....for a price. And it started out wonderfully. The site would ask you what you wanted, you'd type it in, and it would give you a task. When you completed the task, your request would be granted. The tasks started out simple, like inviting people to the site. But when everyone was hooked, they got weirder. They would seem innocent, harmless, even goodhearted....but they could have deadly consequences. A reflection on our materialistic culture and our inability to keep our moral compass straight when our first-world-problem "needs" are on the line, this book should have been incredible. But after a brilliant start, it slowly went downhill...and fell off a CLIFF at the end. Without revealing too much, everything just got.....illogical. It was such abuse of the shock factor that it wasn't even shocking anymore. The "big reveal" confrontation scene felt forced, and during it everything just went off the rails. Also, one of my lovely Goodreads friends made a great point--this whole "damsel in distress" theme was ridiculous. Kaylee, WHY must a guy save you EVERY TIME?!? Overall, started extremely well but went down a slippery slope and crash-landed. Maybe you'll like it better than I did.....it was okay. Rating: 3.38 stars And our song: Leave a Trace by CHVRCHES! Bye, reader! Have a nice night!!
Hey there, reader! I hope you've had/are having a lovely day. How are you? Welcome to today's post! Notable events for today: -I learned that I share a birthday with Ellie Goulding (squee!) -A book I desperately want came out-- it's called NEED -I stuck my hand into a beaker full of -320 degrees Fahrenheit liquid oxygen (yes, this actually happened!) Anyway. Today's topic will be to inform you of a very important issue in schools today. This problem is called...dun dun dun......Silent Lunch. Silent Lunch is a punishment, during which the student being punished must spend their entire lunch period (the only time of the day to socialize!) sitting in a silent room, at a desk, while their friends eat together and chat. Does this seem fair? NO, I say! It does not! Here is my petition to get rid of Silent Lunch: What is Silent Lunch? The answer to that question is this: Something that should be stopped. There are many reasons why this is true. First of all, silent lunch is widely considered by the students to actually be fun. There’s really no point in having this “punishment” if it’s no longer a means of discipline, is there? Second, when we (the students) reached middle school, the privilege of recess was taken away from us. Now, between all our classes and the very short breaks in between them, lunch is the only time we can socialize at all. Silent lunch is making us unable to talk to our friends all day long, which can lead to friendship issues, bullying, physical violence, verbal conflict, and attention seeking behaviors. Also, on the whole, the reason we get Silent Lunch is for talking, but what the teachers don’t understand is that what students really need is some talk time. But by giving us Silent Lunch, they reduce that precious time even more, which gives us more longing to talk and more discipline needed. Pretty redundant, don’t you think? Now, I realize that we need an alternative. But I have more to discuss. Below are a list of alternatives teachers have proposed and why I think they are not suitable: Phone call home: Disturbs the family. Punish the kid, not the parents! Detention: Sitting in a room for half an hour does nothing. Plus, harsh on whatever teacher assigned it. Suspension: Okay, but not for the little things. Expulsion: Okay, now we’re getting way too severe. Writing about it(for a grade): What?! That’s just as ineffective as Silent Lunch, plus as harsh as detention, and really not at all fair to the poor kid. A talk with the teacher: Valid idea, but for most people it wouldn’t do anything, since teachers don’t always understand the “crime.” Okay, but where’s the proof? I’m pretty sure that’s the question you’re asking as you read this. Or, you’re going, “Why should we listen to just this one kid? She just hates getting Silent Lunch.” I can assure you that this is not the case. While I am, in fact, only one kid, I have a lot of backup on this topic, from students and teachers alike. Let me give you the facts: 1.) When ten (5th through 8th grade) teachers were selected at random and each were asked the same three questions, these were the results: -90% of the polled teachers agreed that Silent Lunch was not usually effective. -90% of them also felt that my alternative is a good one. -And 80% of the teachers polled would support my attempt to get rid of Silent Lunch. 2.) When eighteen 7th and 8th grade students were asked what their favorite part of the day was, out of the choices Math, ELA, Science, Humanities, or Lunch, 95% answered with “Lunch.” And 74% of those students agreed that even if they get a Silent Lunch, lunch still is far better than the others. So you see, silent lunch doesn’t have a lasting effect. 3.) When three random seventh graders were interviewed, their answers all supported my argument. 4.) When many seventh and eighth graders were asked how they felt about Silent Lunch(see below), their answers also were in support of my opinion. So...How do students feel? As I mentioned in the previous segment, I asked a large amount of seventh and eighth graders one question---How do you feel about Silent Lunch?---the answers were similarly themed. One student responded with, “I think that it’s a form of punishment, but it doesn’t really punish us.” And when asked if they would support my attempt to get rid of it, the student replied, “Yes.” When asked the same question, a different student replied, “I don’t like Silent Lunch, because it’s not fair.” This student would definitely support the attempt, as would another student who said, “I would support it, because the only time that kids can talk is in lunch, and I feel like if you take that away, they will just get more Silent Lunches because they don’t have a chance to talk.” One student even stated, “I feel like it’s just the teachers trying to take away our freedom, the little of it that we have. I would support this attempt.” One well-respected teacher says, “For some it works, for some it doesn’t. Some students don’t even know why they’re in there. You can’t fix what you don’t know is broken.” All in all, students and teachers support my standpoint. Student Interviews 1) Do you think SL is fair? Student A: Not really. Student B: No. Student C: Not particularly. 2) Would you like to see SL gone? Student A: As long as it doesn’t mean automatic detention. Student B: Yes--it’s not even a punishment! Student C: I think so. 3) Do you think SL is a good punishment? Student A: No, because it’s bad for class--we end up talking in class. Student B: No. Student C: Not usually. 4) Is community service a good alternative? A: Sure. B: Yeah, that’s fair. C: I guess. 5) If you got SL right now, what would be your first reaction? A: Anger at the teacher. B: “NO!” C: Annoyed. 6) Do teachers tend to give SL before a warning? A: Yes, all the time! B: Yeah. C: Yeah, a lot. 7) Does talking merit SL before a warning? A: No. B: No. C: No. 8) Are teachers too quick to give SL? A: Yeah. B: Yes! C: Usually. 9) Should teachers tell us exactly what we do wrong? A: Yes--a lot of the time it’s not even our fault! B: Yeah. C: Yes! 10) Does SL, in your opinion, have a lasting effect? A: No. B: NO! C: Not on most kids. 11) Do you have anything else to say? A: Get rid of SL! B: It’s not fair! Get rid of it! C: No. A Better Alternative Since I know that we can’t just remove Silent Lunch, I have thought of a good alternative: community service. This would be fairer, more effective, and have a far better product than SL. It would leave the students, teachers, and the school as a whole, better off. A few guidelines: -No hard labor (raking, bathroom cleaning, etc.)---because child labor laws exist for a reason, you know. -For the benefit of the school. -Student must work for the entire allotted time.(It could be made clear to students that if they choose not to show up, it will affect their grade in that class.) Obviously, the specifics are up to the Administration, but I was thinking that both the tasks and the amount of time needed to be served could be determined by the teacher who assigned it. If a teacher doesn’t have a room, then they can send the student to the room they teach in, and have the teacher in that room determine the tasks. I also thought that the student should have to report to the teacher’s room at 3:05, and stay up to 20 minutes, so that it is not hard on the parents, and that the tasks could include things such as: -Wiping down desks/chairs -Organizing shelves -Sweeping floors -Organizing/stacking books or papers However, I believe that it should be truly considered and even brought up to the teachers that unless it is a very serious case, a warning needs to be given before assigning community service. I bring this point up not to defend the students, but to say that innocent things are often mistakenly taken for punishment worthy, and this stuff goes on our record. I know a kid--a very good student--who got his only silent lunch for tossing someone a pencil. I think that giving a warning first will reduce the number of innocent students being punished. Overall, I think there are many good reasons to get rid of Silent Lunch, and I hope that you sincerely consider this proposition. So, reader.....what do you think? And, dear reader, I have an apology to make to you. This entry won't include a review or song--I have to go now! But I'll do double next time. You have my word.
Good night, reader. Good evening, reader! I hope you've had a lovely day, and happy Dia de los Muertos! This is my second entry in my series for this couple of days, so if you haven't gotten the chance, check out yesterday's entry :) So, this entry's topic is about one of my favorite things: MUSICALS! Dictionary definition: Also called musical comedy. a play or motion picture in which the story line is interspersed with or developed by songs, dances, and the like. My definition: A play (awesomeness) with a whole bunch of music and dance (even more awesomeness). Totally awesome! So here are some lists about musicals-- Musicals I've Seen: -Wicked -Legally Blonde -Wizard of Oz -Annie -Peter Pan -and MANY more! Musicals I've Been In: -Aristocats -Bugsy Malone -Camp Rock -Peter Pan Dream Role in a Musical: Elphaba from Wicked My Top Two: -Wicked -Legally Blonde Now, I will give a quick summary of those two musicals! Wicked: Wicked is the story of the characters from Wizard of Oz, focusing on the Wicked Witch of the West, AKA Elphaba. It follows her high school years (in which Glinda, known at the time as Galinda, plays a major role), her love for a rebellious, sweet boy named Fiyero, her family life, and the happenings that turned her "wicked". The songs are beautiful and go, in order, as follows: No One Mourns the Wicked Dear Old Shiz The Wizard and I What Is This Feeling? Something Bad Dancing Through Life Popular I'm Not That Girl One Short Day A Sentimental Man Defying Gravity No One Mourns the Wicked Thank Goodness Wonderful I'm Not That Girl As Long as You're Mine No Good Deed March of the Witch Hunters For Good Finale ---------------------------------------- Legally Blonde: Legally Blonde follows ditzy blonde Elle Woods and her cheerleader friends. It chronicles Elle's grand entrance to Harvard Law School (where she goes to follow her ex-boyfriend Warner), her struggle to fit in, her gradual starting to care about being a lawyer, and her weakening attempts to win back Warner as she starts to fall in love....all leading up to the final test of her lawyer skills and a shocking conclusion.... The songs are as follows: Omigod You Guys Serious Daughter of Delta Nu What You Want The Harvard Variations Blood in the Water Positive Ireland Ireland (reprise) Serious (reprise) Chip on my Shoulder So Much Better Whipped Into Shape Delta Nu Nu Nu Take It Like a Man Bend and Snap Gay or European Legally Blonde Legally Blonde Remix Omigod You Guys (reprise) Find My Way/Finale ---------------------------------------------------- That is all! Now for our book review: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline!! Holy cannoli, this book was incredible! Its intriguing premise did not disappoint, and its twists and surprises had me totally blindsided. The characters were well-developed, realistic, and wonderful, from Art3mis to Aech to our protagonist....even Sorrento and the annoying little amateur gunter (I forget what his name is :p) were amazing. I loved the execution of the egg hunt, and the hundreds of pop culture references were delightful...the Monty Python gate had me so happy, I wanted to read the whole movie!! I mean, anything that includes MP and the Holy Grail is awesome in my book :) Anyway, though, this book is absolutely unbelievable. Super creative, fast-paced, extremely well thought-out, and just purely brilliant, this is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Rating: A full-blown 5 stars!!!! ---------------------------------------------------- And lastly our song for today, which is new and amazing.....Hello by Adele! And once you've listened to that (and ONLY THEN), check this out: *ROFL* Peace out, reader! *falls over laughing*
Hi reader! First and foremost, I'd like to apologize to you for the very long gap between the last entry and this one. To make up for it, I will be posting three consecutive entries, each with a different topic, song, and book review. Okay? Okay. So let's hear it for the first entry, whose topic is---Halloween! Happy Halloween, reader! (I meant to do this yesterday, but I was busy....so it's a little late.) Halloween is one of my favorite days of the year--it's a day you can be anyone and anything you want, without anyone judging you! A little background: The modern Halloween is a festive celebration descended from an old holiday called All Hallow's Eve. All Hallow's Eve was believed to be the one day of the year that the spirits of the dead could return to Earth. This is why modern-day Halloween typically involves ghosts/spirits/souls/haunted things/etc. There are many variations on this holiday, such as the Spanish celebration El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and All Soul's Day. Halloween tends to be the most well known. Anyway...... Halloween is a wonderful holiday. I love when you drive around town and see all the decorations, especially the pumpkins! It's so interesting to me to see what a glimpse you can get at people's personalities, just by the way they carve their pumpkins :) Speaking of pumpkins-- pumpkin desserts FTW!!! My favorite part of Halloween, though, is the costumes. Whether your costume should win the prize for most creative, adorable, weird, clever, or just plain hilarious, I love it! Some of my favorite costumes from yesterday: -A milk carton mask with "Missing" above a hole for your face -Nuns from the Sound of Music, walking around singing songs from the musical -Cheshire Cat -Peanut butter and jelly (couple) -Blues Brothers -Gru, Dr. Nefario, and an entourage of minions -Glinda -Giant banana -A little boy who dressed up AS HIS CUBBY (#adorbs!!!) ...and many more! P.S. My costume is on this list....can you figure out which one?? Now for our review (here you go, Bree!)---Let It Snow by John Green/Maureen Johnson/Lauren Myracle! Wow! Better than I expected. This is a collection of three seemingly separate Christmas stories that intertwine in unexpected ways. Each story was filled with a wonderful balance of hilarity and sentiment, at times heartwarming or heartbreaking or sometimes both! John Green is one of my favorite authors, so I have high expectations---and his story didn't disappoint. I've never read anything by Maureen Johnson, but her story was lovely, as was Lauren Myracle's. All the characters were extremely well-developed (for the most part), and the plots were incredible, both realistic and a little unbelievable. I have a few minor complaints but they are, as I said, minor.....overall, great book! *note: this is pretty much fluff. do not go into this expecting Shakespeare, okay? I am rating this on a FLUFF SCALE.* Rating: 4.42 stars And now our song, which I heard on 107.7 AND the Pulse and am now hooked on..... First by Cold War Kids! Hola, mi amigos! Como esta? Anyway, on to the post, am I right? Today's topic is my favorite--music!!! Favorite songs, singers, bands--leave me a comment and we'll discuss :) My favorite singers: Halsey Christina Perri The Script Imagine Dragons The Goo Goo Dolls Colbie Caillait (I probably spelled that wrong) ...and many, many more! My favorite songs: Cecilia and the Satellite by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5 Breakeven by The Script or Colbie Caillait Control, Castle, Hold Me Down, Ghost, and New Americana by Halsey Radioactive, Shots, and Demons by Imagine Dragons Fight Song by Rachel Platten :) anything from Wicked ...and many, many, MANY more! ...and that is all. Now, our book review--of Cinder by Marissa Meyer (book one in the Lunar Chronicles): Cinder is, as you may have guessed, a Cinderella retelling--but a retelling like none you've ever heard before. It tells the story of a future America, where cyborgs are common but not equal to humans, and where a plague called letumosis ravages a land with no cure and no protection. The book follows Linh Cinder, a teenage girl whose stepmother puts her to work as a mechanic. Oh, and she just happens to be half cyborg... When Prince Kai comes to her with an android that needs fixing, it's the beginning of a fateful friendship...and maybe a romance? No, Cinder doesn't have time for that--she has heavier things on her mind when letumosis rips her family apart...and Cinder discovers a deadly secret... Well-written and amazingly developed, Cinder is a brilliant book that showcases a strong heroine and a wonderful cast of intelligent and diverse characters. Definitely worth a read! Rating---4.65 stars (yes, point sixty-five. I thought carefully) And now our song-- Cecilia and the Satellite by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness! Until next time! *blows kiss* Goodbye!
Hellooooo, reader! What's up? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, I know--I should just get to the blog post, right? Okay, fine. Today's topic, my friend, is school! All about it--mine AND yours. Let us start with mine. As you know, I started school last Tuesday. A week ago, to be exact. And I LOVE it! Here's my class schedule: Math Fluency ELA/English STEM (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) or Spanish (Tuesday, Thursday) Sustained Silent Reading Social Studies/Humanities Lunch Art (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) or Gym (Tuesday, Thursday) Science Math Dismissal My favorite subject is STEM. That's Science/Technology/Engineering/Math for those of you who've never heard of it. Also known as DI, or Destination Imagination. Does it ring any bells? And now, for our book review--Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt! Angela's Ashes is a memoir that follows Frank McCourt's childhood in poverty in Ireland. It's a heavy book, for sure, but a pretty good one. Someone who enjoys memoirs, biographies, or historical fiction would probably enjoy this book. It's definitely not a book for kids! Frank McCourt had a very sad, harsh childhood, which is what makes the story very heavy. Don't go into it expecting fluff, happily ever afters, or a sweet little childhood story, because your hopes will be dashed VERY quickly! Overall, a dark, interesting story. 3.75 stars. Lastly, our song--Fight For What's Right by the Rua! |
